Throughout its history, Bergen has been a leading international city of commerce, trade and shipping. It was the capital from 1217 until 1314 and the largest city within all the Nordic countries up until the 17th century. The number of inhabitants is now 270 000. Approximately 30 per cent of the inhabitants in the Western part of Norway live in Bergen.
