Montreal

City Profile

Founded in 1642, Montreal is located in the province of Quebec, Canada. The city covers most of the Island of Montreal at the confluence of the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers. It is the largest city in the province, the second largest in the country and the largest French speaking city in America. It has a population of 1.6 million inhabitants (3.9 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area). The city held the 1976 Olympic Summer Games. Montreal is famous for its Annual Jazz Festival.

Education System

The educational system is divided in four levels: elementary schools (kindergarten, grade 1-6), secondary schools (secondary 1-5), post-secondary collegiate institutions (2-year university preparatory programs or 3-year technical programs) and university-level institutions. Elementary and secondary schools are governed by school boards that are organized by territory and language. Montreal is serviced by two English school boards and three French ones: 77% of students attend French schools while 33% attend English schools. For the Montreal region, in 2011, 55.7% of students obtained a high school diploma after completing 5 years of secondary school, and 70.8% after 7 years.
